To begin my Ava December project, I’ll start with the song “Speak Low” from the Kurt Weill/Odgen Nash musical, “One Touch of Venus.” This song was featured in the 1948 film version, and even though it wasn’t Ava that actually sang in the film, (her voice was dubbed by Eileen Wilson) I enjoyed her performance and loved the song. The lyrics are a play on words from a line from William Shakespeare’s play “Much Ado About Nothing,” in which Don Pedro says “Speak low if you speak love.”
